Flashback Friday

I know there has been a lot of Jacob lately, but March seems to be Jacob month! When he was a week old, he started running a fever and we took him into the Summerlin ER (our pediatrician always said that anything over 100 degrees in the first month, we should go to the ER). He had been lethargic throughout that day and not nursing hardly at all. So we took him in and they had to do a blood draw, spinal tap, and catheterize him to get a clean urine sample. He was so dehydrated that they blew all the veins in his arms, hands, and feet and were finally able to get one on his head, 7th times a charm. They could tell pretty quickly that it was a urinary tract infection. A UTI is highly uncommon in such tiny boys, so that began the tests to see if his plumbing was in working order. The doctor had asked us to see if he peed in an arch, so we left the diaper off and I've never been so happy to see urine fly! (he had much more technical ultrasounds and xrays as well :). It was one week before we found out that all the tests were clear and so he didn't need any surgery. So apparently it was one of those rare instances that a UTI happens, and it happened to him. He was a trooper through it all and after a looooong night in the ER and 10 days of IV antibiotics, we brought him home. How fortunate we were for great doctors, to have a healthy boy. It was a very long 10 days and I had an assurance through it all that he would be fine, and when I think of so many of those whose babies are in for much longer and for much more serious problems, it just makes my heart ache. We had fantastic nurses that made it a little easier to leave him, but it was still probably the hardest thing I've had to do. My sister Amy was amazing, watching Michael in the mornings so I could go to the hospital and then she would go to see Jacob and cuddle him in the afternoons. We had family come over at night after we put Michael to bed and then Mark and I would head over to the hospital for another visit. So a year ago this was what we were doing.
This is one of my favorite pictures of Jacob for this reason: It was taken the day that we came home from the hospital, making him less than 3 weeks old. But he is smiling, and it seemed as if he was just so happy to be home.

What a sweet picture at the end! How frightening to go through that with such a new baby! So many things can go wrong, it is amazing what we can overcome. Life is truly a miracle and a blessing!

How scary! I can't imagine seeing my baby go through that. How fortunate you were to have family around to help out with Michael!

That last picture is precious. That would be so scary to have to go through. It is so nice of you to be so sensitive to others who have had to go through the same thing or worse. I'm so happy that your little boy is healthy now, and such a cutie.
