Question: Are you allowed to have an opinion if you have a mullet? Or does the mere fact that you have a mullet demonstrate your poor judgement and make all your opinions null and void?
I accidently set off an alarm at work today and one of the maintenance guys (with a mullet) was very rude to me about it. I, of course, was nice and very apologetic. However, it got me thinking, it's too bad this man allowed to vote and drive and even procreate!
Now is that bad?
Usually I work at HealthSouth Rehab, but on Friday afternoons I cover for another speech-language therapist at a nursing home. There is one gentleman there that I particularly enjoy, he had a pretty devastating stroke and has made great improvements over the past few months. He is now close to being strong enough to eat again. Each time I see him I help him clean out his mouth (if you are tube fed and not swallowing well some pretty nasty stuff can build up) and brush his teeth, then we do his swallow exercises and at the end I do a little trial of thickened liquid or pudding to see how he is managing it. Anyhow, mentally he is still intact and he is only in his late 60's I think, so not very old. He has one wonderful friend from his church that comes to see him almost daily, otherwise no family. So in one of our discussions he mentioned that he liked Benny Goodman, and I happened to have a CD of his big band music, as well as a CD of Frank Sinatra hits. So I brought them in today and gave them to him and he was so excited. I put Frank in his CD player before I left today and when I left he was smiling- so it was a good day. I just think...this poor man has been there for 3 months, often with the only sounds being his oxygen or a demented roommate. He said that he knows his mind plays tricks on him from the isolation, for example he thought for sure he had seen indians fighting in the meadow scene that was part of his wallpaper border, but he knew it wasn't real, eventhough he said it seemed so real at the time. So yes, Frank Sinatra was a welcome change and old blue eyes has a way of soothing the soul.

Rachel- You are a great therapist!!! That is so nice of you to think to bring him that!
I think you judged the mullet man right on. What a cute story about the stroke patient! :)
I have thought MANY times... and I know this thought is not original, I just don't know who I am plaegerizing it from, but if you have to pass a test to drive a car you DEFINITELY should have to pass something to be able to have kids! So I hear you on whether this guy should be allowed to procreate... and I think that one of those test just might be a mullet test.
You are such a thoughtful person. What a horrible situation to be in and I'm sure you are a bright spot in his life.
Oh my gosh! That's so funny! (the mullet part, I mean)And the rest about taking such a personal interest in your patients is impressive. I bet there could stand to be a lot more people like that around. It's great to keep up with you guys through your blog!
Totally agree with you on the mullet! I don't know how good I would be at your job. I am afraid I would get way too attached. You are so wonderful and I'm sure he will be forever grateful for you kindness.
So, we need to get together again!! i have another little sewing project we can do. Scripture totes out of placemats...so cute. I'm gonna post pics on my blog soon.
